The traces of a royal reisdence in Peronne date back from the Merovingian period. It was burnt down by the Vikings in 884 and the Count of Vermandois subsequently built the castle and the city's fortifications. It is in the castle that King Charles the Simple was held prisoner from 923 to 929 by Herbert II de Vermandois.
At the beginning of the 13th century, the castle again became a royal residence andtook its present form. King Philip Augustus built a castle typical of Philippian architecture with four sandstone towers connected by brick walls lined with ditches and an entrance gate with drawbridge and portcullis. In 1214, the king held there captive Renaud de Dammartin , count of Boulogne, after his defeat at the battle of Bouvines . A keep was located in the western part of the castle; it was destroyed during the Siege of Péronne in 1536.
It is in this castle that King Louis XI was held prisoner by Charles le Téméraire, Duke of Burgundy in October 1468.
The fortress was transformed in the 17th century to resist the attacks of the artillery. Until 1914, the castle kept a military activity of stores and armory. The towers were damaged during the Battle of the Somme. In 1924, three towers and curtain walls connecting them were classified as a historical monument .
Since 1992, the castle has housed the entrance to the Historial de la Grande Guerre.
The castle was recreated manually from various photos and videos from the internet and comes with its own lights and POI.
