This is a proof of concept mod for decreasing the opacity of the windshields to act as a tinting to combat the brightness and over-saturation in VR.
There are 2 darkness levels in the Mod.
%50 - Uses a %50 grey color to control the alpha channel transparency in the windshield texture file
%75 - Uses aproximately a %75 white color (lighter color will result in less transparency, thus darker windshield)
When installed, these two options will be loaded as liveries for the TBM aircraft as seen in the screenshot.
Suggested Use:
- Load into the default TBM livery and find a high brightness situation
- Active-pause the sim
- Use the developer mode Aircraft Selector to re-load into either the %50 or %75 varient. This will allow you to see very easily the effect of the tinting on the windshield
Known issues:
Darkening the windshield does not seem to have any effect on the amount of light being reflected off interior surfaces
To install:
Place the extracted folder into your Community folder and (re)start MSFS.

I know i'm late but, could you do it for the fbw a320 ? Vr is so overexposed its very ugly ..

I spent several days attempting to do the same modification for other aircraft but was never successful. Many aircraft use the same core "glass" texture and no matter how I tried to modify it, it did not have the same affect as I was able to do with the TBM. I suggest checking out the OpenXR Toolkit if you haven't already. There are brightness controls built into it that help. It doesn't fix the exposure, but it helps cut down the eye watering brightness in the sim

Can you give me any tips for doing this with any aircraft I want to adjust? I'm using Paint.net since the files don't like GIMP. I'm trying to clear the tint from the hornet. I painted two files red, and got some affect. But I'm not sure if red or what shade is best.

Ahh....paint.net did it. And I had to change a file white, instead of gray.

Any chance at getting this for the longitude? I hate the tinting that washes out the view, especially at night. Or is there a file I can modify to do this?

Thank you, this is just great. With HP Reverb G1 this makes daylight so much more realistic and night lighting also which is still awful as default. I won't even dare to ask you to do this to some other planes too - but maybe I will if Asobo is not giving a functional brightness setting in Sim Update 6 😊

Glad you are enjoying it. I have tried with other aircraft but have been unsuccessful. The default TBM uses its own cockpit windshield texture and adjusting the alpha channel has the effects you get in this mod/livery. All of the other aircraft in the sim rely on the default glass texture. No matter how I modify the texture, I am unable to produce the same effect.
