While different species of Beluga Whales can be found in waters all around the world, the most at risk are those that live in the Cook Inlet, near Anchorage Alaska. Since 1979, the population of Cook Inlet Beluga Whales has declined almost 80 percent, from about 1,300 whales to only around 279 whales in 2018. Because of their status as ‘Endangered’ under the Endangered Species Act, their habitat is now protected as one of NOAA’s fisheries, which prohibits certain types of fishing, boating, and various types of recreation and commercial expansion that threatens their fragile, shallow-water habitats.
