This mod changes the Taxi Ribbon and Parking Assistance 3D objects colors and sizes. It consists in unobtrusive modifications to Asobo_UI.bgl to make the assistance helpers naturally blending with the ground, less invasive in VR and more convenient in 3D.

Description:

This mod changes the Taxi Ribbon and Parking Assistance 3D objects colors and sizes.
It consists in unobtrusive modifications to Asobo_UI.bgl to make the helpers naturally
blending with the ground, less invasive in VR and more convenient in 3D.

Examples:

Smaller Green Taxi Ribbon Arrows
- Blending naturally with the taxi lines and displaying only a few meters away from the aircraft.
- Visible at night.

Blue/Green Parking Box
- Displaying as thin blue/green patterns over the ground.
- Visible at night.

Blue/None Parking Box
- Displaying a thin blue pattern over the ground and disappearing once inside the area.
- Visible at night.

White/None Parking Box
- Displaying almost like ground painted parking lines and disappearing once inside the area.
- Reflective only.

Guided Installation:

- Double click rxp-taxi-helpers-mod.bat to run the installation script.
- This script auto-detects the location of the package files and will guide you through the installation process.
- Follow the instructions for customization options, wait until completed - done!
- Alternatively, you can directly invoke the script from a PowerShell prompt:

PS> .\rxp-taxi-helpers-mod.ps1

Manual Installation:

- Use the following PowerShell command to get additional help:

PS> Get-Help .\rxp-taxi-helpers-mod.ps1 -Detailed

How to uninstall:

- Proceed with the guided installation and choose every first item in the lists.
- Or use the following PowerShell command:

PS> .\rxp-taxi-helpers-mod.ps1 -RestoreDefaults

IMPORTANT:

A backup copy is saved every time you make any change to the original file in the original folder.
Every Asobo update comes with a new Asobo_UI.bgl file, reinstall after each update.

This is expected if you double-click the .ps1 Powershell script, and why installation instructions are recommending to basically double-click the .bat instead, which is simple bootstrap to run the .ps1 script.

However, the current .bat is not working for everyone and we're planning an update. If you prefer not waiting, you can manually edit the .bat and replace the content with the following single line:

@PowerShell.exe -NoLogo -NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "& '%~dpn0.ps1'"

There is a simpler way to pack the mod. I mean pack it as a normal mod in Community folder.

What you need to do is this:

Create a folder with the name of your mod or mod variant... for example I have done one called: "Small Taxi Ribbon Blue Green"
Inside you need to have one folder and 2 files: "scenery" (folder) - layout.json and manifest.json
In the "scenery" folder make a folder called: "Global". Inside this one make a folder called "Asobo_UI" (you know... the path to the file)
Inside "Asobo_UI" folder put your modified file: Asobo_UI.BGL
Go back to first folder and have a usual manifest file but edit it to look something similar/inspired by this:

6. Likewise you need to edit the layout.json and this one is tricky. If you do it with auto_json.exe it will list normally but not offer you to save. You can simply copy the offered text and then use it to manually create the json file in notpad++ etc.

for the blue - green variant in my case it looks like this:

I think the size is important or something .

After that the mod is complete. Install it in community folder like usual with Addon Linker etc.

Hi,

Are you sure this is working for THIS file in particular?

In effect, there are a few files which you can't override with a community folder replacement as this is somewhat "hard-coded" in the game.

I tested it with your files and with Neo mod and it seemed to work. Give it a try. The Json files are difficult to make as they are either too short of maybe are pointing to paths that the json generators refuse to save to.

I was inspired for this edit by the tree height mod that modify an xml file that also is difficult to mod and most of people used hard mods of game files instead of community mod type.

A community folder override was traditionally not working for these files. Do you think it can now, only because SU9 is relaxing the rules and is allowing the override, or may we speculate it is a bug in SU9 which will be patched back in SU10 and will make this method moot?

It works sometimes... I couldn't figure out why not all the time. For example your mod sometimes works at the start of the flight on the ground then at landing is not working anymore.

How do you do the bgl edits? your files are dated 2021 as opposed to the other mod that has them dated 2022.

v2.0 is a script and it edits the original file in-place (after making a backup copy), therefore, the file date doesn't revert back in time to any earlier copy!

PS: I've tried adding this in a community mod just in case, and it doesn't work for me.

I have the hard mod set up in OvGME (Ov Generic Mod Enabler) which is a free tool made primarily for DCS World but can be easily set up to work with MFS also. So I don't need script and other complications. But I would like this mod to work through community folder.

It is for sure not a hard locked file! Because the mod loads a lot of times. Make the mod as I said above and put it in Community and disable your hard mod done by the script and just load the game several times and you will see it loads sometimes. Once you see it loaded once you will realize it is something we are missing to make it "stick".

It looks like SU9 is causing a few more issues regarding the taxi ribbon and the mod ribbon color might not be always showing as expected*:

I like this mod but I like to manage these types of mods myself and don't want an installer. I liked how you previously packaged the mod. Is it possible to have both types of installation options in the download?

Hi,

Please note v2.0 is not an installer but a mod script! In other words, instead of copying a file over, it is instead modifying the file directly based on different settings you're providing.

You can therefore use the script in order to prepare a bank of modified files, that you can later manually copy over if your prefer!

And because it is a script, you can even modify the script and add your own colors, sizes, etc... I believe for those of you with a minimum of programming experience, the script should be easy to follow through and understand (except maybe the GLTF low level specifics).

And as a bonus, for those wanting to dig deeper, the script accepts the -ExtractModels command line... 😉

Unfortunately, the BAT file does not work, even if you try to open it as an administrator.

After a few attempts, the installation works very easy as follows :

Open the file "rxp-taxi-helpers-mod.ps1" with the right mouse button.
"Select "Run with Powershell"
Windows security question => click on "Open"

The installation program opens and displays the options.

Continue with "Y"
An Infobox asks "Do you want to restore default settings" Y/N

"Y" => If this mod is already installed and you don't want to change the color settings

"N" => If you want to change the settings for the color and size (100% is the devault size of the sim; I use 10%) of the taxi ribbon as well as the display and color of the parking box.

After the complete installation, the program can be closed with "Press any key".

Hi, my best advise is to read the document you're linking to. Not only it explains what this is about, but it also gives directions to set your environment appropriately.

In this case, this is your computer, your system, configured for your usage, and it seems to be configured to prevent execution of scripts. Therefore only you, as the admin of your own computer, can set the policy corresponding to your needs.

😲modding a program on a Windows computer - and never heard of PowerShell? Well, just type the Windows symbol on your keyboard, then type "poweshell" and select "Run as Administrator". This should do the job.

You are right Windows prevents executing .ps1 files by default.

What about right click though, then "Run with PowerShell" :

Or did you just let everything installed by default (i.e. these folders are therefore visible only through the AppData\Local like this:

I've just updated the mod to v2.0.1 with a .bat file.

Just double-click the .bat file to install, It automatically runs PowerShell and elevates the script for UAC.

This is a script, you don't install any file, you run the script instead...

It's a very good mod, just like Neo4316's, but unfortunately the arrows are too small for me because they are barely visible in certain weather conditions and are therefore unusable, so it would be nice if they could also be resized like in the other one Mod 10-35%

Yes, I just activated it when starting and tested it when taxiing to the runway, unfortunately still a bit small for me and hardly visible, something bigger would be much better for me

However, I only copied the file accordingly and did not work with the script because I have no idea about it

Edit: Done, I tried and created the script, hope it works afterwards when landing too

Problem when installing with the script, no matter what percentage I take, I always have the full size of the arrows, the size does not change, I tried with 10,15,20,25 and still always full size

Unable to get this to work on the Steam version.

I found the steam version I needed to replace using Explorer search, created a backup and copied the new one in. However, I'm still getting the normal default ribbon.

I've followed the instructions several times.

Is this compatible with The SU8 Steam version?

There is some mention it works out of steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator\Additional Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI. I'll give that a try, although it didn't come up on an Explorer search.

I had used the Subtle Taxi Ribbons and really loved that mod. For it was closed, i used yours now and i am really upset with this one compared to the Subtle. They were always good to see and i do not need/want to see a Parking Box. These rxp ribbons are nearly invisible in daylight, they were mostly beside the Taxiline in EDDB .

Sad to say, but i must look where i can get the Subtle Ribbons back, because i was to quick with deleting the download i had.

Your ribbons are too subtle and get visible too late in my front.

Thank you for the addition explanation, I believe I now understand what you're referring to.

In effect, this mod is using small triangles and therefore the game will only display a few of them around you, typically 4 in front and 4 behind. The game is coded to display more triangles if they are larger, and less if they are smaller.

This mod is also tuned to be unobtrusive and to display just a tad amount of "helpers", so that it keeps "realistic" enough (in the sense that there are no flashy arrows IRL when taxiing).

After SU9 I'll probably add a few variations.

I have been using Subtle Taxi Ribbon but when it closed I switched to yours. But the only thing that shows up is the original MSFS blue ribbon. What am I missing here/

Did you just stick this in your community folder? This mod does not work that way. There are detailed instructions contained in the README file. Also, be aware when following the instructions, there is a backup of the original contained in each folder as well.

there is a BGL file in steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator\Additional Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI. Had this issue as well, if it does not work on the AppData folder for the steam version. idk if you are using the MS Store or Steam, but here's the steam version.

This mod was posted a while back already 😊 though I'd very much prefer our application to the market place which is pending processing for more than 20 months now gets finally approved so that all FS2020 users could enjoy freedom of choice and quality products from RXP, like they always did for the last 20 years in all major simulators except FS2020.

Hi, pecentage doesn't matter much as a value in this mod (see my answer to @cabose369) as long as they are unobtrusive enough. As for the parking box, I'll probably add an option for this not before SU-IX though.

HI,

Either there is a file change in SU8, or you're using SU9, or you've misplaced the files (let alone any other potential reasons as simple as a bug among many others in FS2020).

Then the only possible explanation I can think of is that the wrong file is in the right place, or the right file is in the wrong place. You might want to try again, making sure you're using the right file from the mod archive, and you're placing it at the proper location:

Find the default Asobo_UI.BGL file which should be located in the following folder:

"OneStore\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI\Asobo_UI.BGL"

It is first and foremost the fs-base folder, whichever versions you're using. What matters is whether you're using default location or custom location.

If you're using the latter, you obviously know where the fs-base folder is because you're using a custom location...

If you're using the former (default install location): they are pretty much similar and usually there:

- Steam:

{drive}:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base

- Windows store:

{drive}:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\fs-base

So I have put the Asobo BGL File from the park_blue_green folder at C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI. It replaced the BGL file at that location, the arrows are still big

UPDATE: I have found the BGL file that works, it is not in the Appdata roaming file, it's in:

steamapps\common\MicrosoftFlightSimulator\Additional Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI

Did you let FS2020 install to the default location or did you tell Steam to install it in the steam library on another drive?

Like I said: if you've not installed FS2020 in the default install location, then obviously you know where you've installed it, so you know where to look for the files!

Otherwise, if you've installed FS2020 in the default location, the aforementioned paths are most likely the correct ones.

This is a great mod. The only issue I have is that in the bright daylight the green arrows are too small and hard to see.

Could you make an option for a little bit larger arrows, and maybe them be blue instead of green?

The RXP mod is about providing the less obtrusive as possible helper, while preserving its intended helpfulness. This directly drives the design decision behind keeping the arrows smaller, green to blend with taxiways as most as possible, and minimal parking box too (with an option to make it look it is painted on the ground, not emmisive but reflective, like any other ground marking). In short, the general idea is to limit the gamification of the helpers and make them fit as much naturally as possible.

I understand some of you would like to have the same level of customization as you probably used to have with another great taxi ribbon mod which is now discontinued and I understand this too (I believe I do). I'm not into going all the way like this other mod, but I can certainly add a few picked and useful options!

Please can there be an option for no parking box helpers at all, just taxi ribbons?

Also different size options for the taxi ribbon markers?

Hi, thank you for your suggestions. The closest would be the White/None option where the parking spot displays as a thin white marking on the ground while taxiing, nearly like regular painted airport ground white markings. When the aircraft enters the marked area, it completely disappears.

I agree, no box is better as most the time you can see the park based on ground crew and the direction of taxi ribbon, not sure if you can ditch the landing path as well, then this would be perfect ! God knows why Asobo linked the taxi ribbon to flight path?!!

Your directions are in Microsoft Store English. I only Speak Steam. Can't find the original files to install.

Find the default Asobo_UI.BGL file which should be located in the following folder:

"OneStore\fs-base\scenery\Global\Asobo_UI\Asobo_UI.BGL"

It is first and foremost the fs-base folder, whichever versions you're using. What matters is whether you're using default location or custom location.

If you're using the latter, you obviously know where the fs-base folder is because you're using a custom location... If you're using the former (default install location), they are pretty much similar and usually there:

- Steam:

{drive}:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Official\Steam\fs-base

- Windows store:

{drive}:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Official\OneStore\fs-base

I don't know how you guys do this, it's magic to me! What are the chances that this could be turned on/off without having to go to options? Like adding it to the toolbar at the top of the screen?
