Thanks ROBBIE92 for comissioning this amazing livery! Nothing is better than a first hand experience, so here goes his words:
"In about 1950 a small airline was formed, by a Liverpool Councilor.. Frank Wilson & his sons, they called it STARWAYS LTD. This company was run, using a Percival Q6 and an Avro Anson. Based in Hangar No 3 (West Apron).
bout 1950-51 a DC3 was acquired, to start a longer route with bigger passenger loads on Mr Wilsons Cathedral Tours company. In 1951-52 seven ex military (RAF) C47-DC3-Dakota a/c, five of these were refurbished up to passenger config, the other two originally used as xmas trees (ie) parts to make up the other five, then sold on. These five a/c where used on the longer Routes-Tours, etc. In 1956 I joined Starways as an apprentice Aero Engine Fitter, making the number of staff upto about 14. This carried on untill about 1961-62 when Starways ceased, and became Aviation Overhaul LTD, Working out of the new Hangars (Along Speke road), Although, the a/c still carried the Staways livery. During this period a number of C54s/DC4s were bought or leased to provide larger capacity, Later on two Viscount 700s which were faster & easier to maintain. This unfortunately eased out the DC3s. In 1965 renamed as Star Avia, Servicing small a/c Items Pumps - Motors etc, thus making most of the staff out of work, some of us joined British Eagle, who were now in Hangar 1, this ended the Starways-Aviation Overhaul operations. For me a very happy number of years working on those lovely Aircraft. I personally carried on with British Eagle working on Viscounts-Britannias. untill 1968, when Eagle was put out of business contract wise, which made all of the work force redundant. So over to Cambrian-British Airways working on Viscounts-BAC 1-11s untill 1979, made redundant again.. I relocated to Gatwick with British Caledonian-British Airways, working on BAC1-11s, Boing 707s through to 767s, Moving over to airframes I always said, as soon as they removed the propellors, I would lose interest in engines.. I finally early retired from the Aircraft industry in 1994....
I did not finish working then ..but that is another story..."
Starways was a british iarline that was based in Speke Airport in Liverpool and operated the Dakotas from 1950 and 1955, who were of great importance on the growth of the company. Some of their airplanes are still flying well into the XXI century some 70 yeas after, showing how well the maintenance of Starways was!
This package includes G-AMJU, G-AMPO, G-AMPY, G-AMRB and G-AMSN.
that you did for me.. I was wondering if you could do G-AMRB, in the old livery, even though I like her as she is.. Unfortunately, she never lived long enough to wear the later livery.. Because she crashed in March 1956 on a positioning flight to Renfrew at Largs, The later colours were applied to the fleet about a year later, So unfortunately she never had the later livery..She should have the darker blue stripe through the windows.. smaller Starways name over the windows, and the white rudder,,The more I look at her, I think she should really be in the ealier scheme.
Can you do,,
